Drug Prohibition & Anti-Vaxxism

If the State has a legitimate interest in protecting you from dangerous drugs, it certainly follows that it has a legitimate interest in protecting you from dangerous vaccine refusal. You have lent the State the authority to fine or imprison you for self-medication--if, for example, you do so with "dangerous" drugs like cocaine and heroin. In so doing, you have also lent the State the authority to fine or imprison you, or put the kibosh to your livelihood, if you refuse its mandated vaccine. 

The underlying premise? The State knows better than you do what's good for you. 

When it comes to the democratic consensus, the "my body, my choice" precept does not apply to the natural right to self-medication. It does apply, however, to abortion. Never mind that, under the first scenario, the adult makes a decision that can risks only his own health and well-being, whereas under the second, the adult makes a decision that results in the destruction of a miniature human being, who does not--and cannot--consent to the procedure. 

Millions of otherwise intelligent human beings defend fining and imprisoning adults who freely choose to smoke, snort, or inhale the substances of their choice. Those same human beings will turn around and vehemently object to any legislative measure aiming to curtail a woman's right to kill her baby. Quite the phenomenon, no?
